BANDHAS
Bandhas can be contracted mildly or strongly, or anywhere in between. At first you may only be able to tell the difference between a bandha that is either fully engaged or not engaged. If your pelvic floor and low abdominal muscles are weak, for example, you may also fmd that you can only hold a contraction for a few seconds before your muscles just seem to “slip away” - It takes time and practise to use the band hos with great precision.
There are many places in the Primary Series where a movement which is physically challenging or even seemingly impossible becomes easily manageable when you engage the bandhas. For example, it’s common to feel that your arms are too short or weak to lift your body in many of the lifting poses or to jump through in the vinyasa (see pages 70—73). In these cases, fully engaging the bandhas can instantly make you feel lighter and stronger so that a movement becomes possible.
